Hello, friends. I’ve been on hiatus for a while, but I wanted to say that I hope you are okay today, and being kind to one another.
Right now, I’m feeling scared — scared that the fear and hate and violence will escalate, and that we won’t be able to find our way back. History has shown us, over and over, how easy it is for basically good people to do terrible things to other people. It starts when we start believing that there’s an “us” and a “them,” and that it’s us versus them.
Eff that. The only way we get through this is together.
Will hugs and casseroles bring us peace and unity? No, of course not. I don’t know to get people to practice basic human decency towards one another, to prioritize the de-escalation of conflict, the avoidance of violence, the safety and well-being of all people.
But right now, a lot of people are hurting, and if food can’t fix the big problems, maybe it can help us get through today. Can you double your dinner recipe tonight, and bring food to a friend who is too depressed — or too busy protesting — to cook? Or pick up groceries for friends who are afraid to go to the grocery store alone?
And if all you want to do is sit in your kitchen and binge on comfort food, here’s an apple pie recipe I like. Share it with someone.
