What do broccoli, cauliflower, and kale have in common? That’s right: they’re all in my garden. Also, they’re all varieties of the same plant species: Brassica oleracea, along with cabbages, brussels sprouts, collard greens, and kohlrabi.
You’re also correct if your answer contained any of the following: cole crops, cruciferous vegetables, healthy, obnoxious, vitamins, minerals, folates, antioxidants, superfood, and “How to trick your kids into eating….”
If you said “they’re all green,” though, you’re wrong. Sometimes they’re purple — like two of the varieties I just planted. (There’s also that bright orange cauliflower variety, but I don’t have any of that.)
So today’s quiz: name that brassica. Of the three kinds of seedlings pictured above, which is broccoli, which is cauliflower, and which is kale?
